Can I get fingerprinted before I pass the state exam?

Yes. As soon as you have your TREC ID number from your eligibility letter, you can schedule fingerprinting. It doesn't have to wait until after you pass your exam.

What if I've already been fingerprinted for TREC before?

TREC's own fee schedule describes the $38.25 fingerprinting fee as due if the applicant has not previously been fingerprinted for TREC, so a prior TREC fingerprint record may mean you don't need to pay or redo it. Confirm your specific situation with TREC or IDEMIA directly.

Does a criminal record stop the process?

Not automatically. TREC's standard is honesty, trustworthiness, and integrity, a record triggers a more detailed review, not an automatic denial.

How long does the background check itself take?

TREC hasn't published a fixed number for this step. Once you pass your exam and clear your background check, TREC emails your license document within 5-10 business days.

Fingerprinting to license clearance: the complete Texas workflow.

Every Texas real estate applicant goes through the same fingerprinting and background check process. Here's exactly what happens, in order.

Why this step exists

Everyone applying for a Texas real estate license is required by law to have fingerprints on file with the Texas Department of Public Safety, so a background check can be performed before TREC issues a license. It runs in parallel with your coursework and exam, not necessarily after them.

THE WORKFLOW

From TREC ID to license clearance.

STEP 1

Get your TREC ID number

Once TREC reviews your license application, you'll receive an eligibility letter with the ID number you need to schedule fingerprinting and your exam.

STEP 2

Schedule electronic fingerprinting

Book an appointment with IdentoGO by IDEMIA at any of its Texas locations. Reservations are encouraged at least 24 hours ahead, same-day walk-in service isn't guaranteed.

STEP 3

Pay the fingerprinting fee

$38.25, paid directly to the vendor, unless you've been fingerprinted for TREC before, in which case it may not apply. Confirm your situation directly with IDEMIA or TREC.

STEP 4

Attend your appointment

Bring your TREC eligibility letter. You'll be photographed and fingerprinted electronically, then given a receipt, there's no physical fingerprint card, so keep that receipt.

STEP 5

DPS and FBI process your background check

Your fingerprints and photo are transmitted electronically to the Texas Department of Public Safety and the FBI for a criminal history review.

STEP 6

TREC factors the results into your application

A criminal record doesn't automatically disqualify you. If TREC needs more information, it will contact you directly rather than simply denying the application.

STEP 7

Your license clears once every piece is in

Background check clear, exam passed, application complete, together that's what triggers your license. TREC emails your license document within 5-10 business days of passing your exam.
