How many times can you retake the Texas real estate exam?
You get three attempts at each portion, National and State. Fail a portion three times, complete the extra coursework, and you get three more attempts. Here's exactly how it works:
- You only retake what you failed. If you pass the National portion but fail the State portion (or vice versa), you only retake that one portion, not the whole exam, as long as you do it within one year of the date your application was filed with TREC.
- There's a 24-hour wait. Re-exam reservations can't be made at the test center itself, and you'll pay the exam fee again each time ($43 for Sales, $39 for Broker).
- Three attempts total per portion. If you fail the same portion three times, you can't retest or submit a new application until you complete additional TREC-approved education: 30 hours if you failed only one portion (national or state), 60 hours if you failed both (TREC Rule §535.57(f)).
- Then you can reschedule. School Estate reports the extra course(s) to TREC for you, and you upload a copy of your third failed score report through the REALM portal. Allow 5-7 business days for TREC to process it and authorize Pearson VUE to let you reschedule. You then get three more attempts, and the same cycle applies until you pass.
If your original application expires before this is resolved, you'll need to reapply and meet whatever requirements are current at that time.
An example of how retakes work.
Say you pass the National portion and fail the State portion on your first attempt. You're done with National for good, and you have two more attempts at State. If you fail State all three times, you take one additional 30-hour course (we report it to TREC for you), upload your third failed score report through REALM, and then get three more attempts at State.

You have to wait 24 hours before scheduling a retake, and you can't book it at the test center. Reserve it with Pearson VUE online or by phone.
How much does it cost to retake the Texas real estate exam?
You pay the exam fee again for each attempt: $43 for the sales agent exam, $39 for the broker exam. It's paid when you make the reservation, by credit card, debit card, or voucher; the test center doesn't accept payment.
