REALTOR vs. real estate license: what's the difference?

If you searched "realtor license," you're in the right place. Here's a quick clarification that will save you time.

WHAT YOU GET FROM TREC
Texas Real Estate Sales Agent License

This is what you actually need to practice real estate in Texas. TREC (the Texas Real Estate Commission) issues it after you complete 180 hours of approved coursework and pass the state exam. It's the license that lets you represent buyers and sellers legally.

SEPARATE MEMBERSHIP
REALTOR® Designation

REALTOR® is a membership title from the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR), not a license issued by TREC. Many agents join after getting licensed, but it's optional, not a legal requirement to work in real estate.

Bottom line: you need a Texas real estate sales agent license from TREC. School Estate's 180-hour TREC-approved course is the first step. A broker, not a bot, walks you through every part of it.

YOUR PATH TO LICENSED

How licensing works in Texas.

TREC sets the requirements. School Estate handles the course, the prep, and the support. Here's the full path, start to finish.

STEP 1
Complete 180 hours of TREC-approved courses

Texas requires six specific courses totaling 180 hours. Both School Estate packages include all six, online at your own pace, with daily live Zoom study groups and a broker mentor available 7 days a week.

STEP 2
Submit your license application to TREC

Apply online at TREC.texas.gov and pay the state application fee. TREC reviews your eligibility, including background check requirements.

STEP 3
Pass the state exam at Pearson VUE

The Texas real estate exam has two sections: National and State. School Estate's exam prep includes 2,000+ practice questions and a live weekend Exam Cram covering the entire exam.

STEP 4
Activate your license with a sponsoring broker

Your license is inactive until a licensed Texas broker sponsors it. School Estate connects every graduate with brokerages including RE/MAX, Compass, Coldwell Banker, Century 21, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, and eXp.

Enroll in the 180-Hour Course

Most students complete the 180 hours in about 7 weeks and are licensed and placed in about 10 weeks.

"The support you get is hard to describe, it makes me wish I was a poet. They are here for you 24/7. No joke, I spoke with Blaise for an hour and a half on a Tuesday night asking for an explanation on a couple of questions I had."

Chad L, Google review, GranburyGOOGLE REVIEW

"Blaise is a great teacher. He takes what might initially be foreign concepts & provides familiar analogies so it "clicks". Assistance is readily available. Highly recommend School Estate."

Sarah C., Google review, Austin

"Blaise is truly awesome! He was ALWAYS available to help with any questions I had with either the curriculum or the program used. I passed both exams on the first try and I owe a lot to him and School Estate."

Eric R., Google review, Austin

"The program did an excellent job of ensuring that I understood the key points of each course and preparing me for the state and national exams."

Chad T., Google review, San Antonio

A nearly perfect 5.0-star record across Texas. Serving Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Fort Worth, Plano, and Dallas with only two non-five-star reviews in over two decades.
